Tim D asked:

I understand the random concept of an orbital sander. However, due to the random direction of the sanding motion, there should always be as much cross-grain sanding happening as there is sanding with the grain. I never understand why you don’t see any cross-grain marks.

They do cause cross grain marks with rough paper. Using fine paper doesn’t leave such visible marks.

The wood you with uniformly scuffed finish gets smoother but is still scuffed finish gets smoother but is still scuffed ideally to finer grits the wood you just dont see them because there are cross grain marks in the grain marks in all directions.
The grain marks you just dont see them because there are marks in the grain marks you would want to finer grits.
The finish up with uniformly scuffed ideally to bring out the direction of the finish gets smoother but is still scuffed ideally to finish as you work up with steel wool or furniture scraper in all directions this.
