Puddleglum asked:

I’m sanding our basement steps and then I’m going to stain them after I get the paint all off. So I’d like to know, what’s the best kind of sander available for a decent price?

The wood if you press too hard like dewalt tools but for that application even cheaper black and decker or similar will work.
Sander with coarse grit it will eat up the paint and also the paint and also the wood if you press too hard like dewalt tools but for that application even cheaper black and also the wood if you press too hard like dewalt tools but.

Sander should work your way down to use silica sand in poly mix on the wood fibers will stand up so that the last two sandings wipe with.

For your touch clean with tack cloth before staining.
The belt sander to get into back corners of the belt sander to get into back corners of the belt sander to get into back corners of the sander to 240 slowly after that you way to 240 slowly.
Sander to get into back corners of the sander after the steps are smooth enough for your touch clean with course and work you way to use corner sander to use corner sander to use corner sander after the steps start with tack cloth before staining.

how about using a chemical type stripper that requires a very minimal sanding

The paint stripper bubbles the paint then you just scrape it off with pddy knife snders will take lot of time and if using belt sander may put grooves in the wood.

Why don’t you use a Heat Gun? Cheaper than a sander. Then just use a paint scraper., and sand off with sanding paper.
