Bomberguy asked:

The Saunders-Roe SR.A/1 was a prototype fighter aircraft tested by the Royal Air Force shortly after World War II. The first prototype flew on July 15, 1947, and while it and its two sisters proved to have good performance and handling, the need for such aircraft had completely evaporated with the end of the war. Furthermore, the success of the aircraft carrier in the Pacific had demonstrated a far more effective way to project airpower over the oceans. In addition, the cockpit canopy was small and heavily framed, giving the pilot a poor view outside the aircraft. The project was finally abandoned in May 1951. The first prototype, TG263, has been preserved, and is on display at Solent Sky ( previously Southampton Hall of Aviation). Both other aircraft were lost in accidents during the four-year flight test programme. Although the aircraft never received an official name, it was referred to by company workers as ‘Squirt’. General characteristics Crew: 1Length: 50 ft (14.24 m) Wingspan: 46 ft (14.02 m) Height: 16 ft 9 in (5.11 m) Wing area: 415 ft² (38.6 m²) Empty weight: 11262 lb (5108 kg) Loaded weight: 16225 lb (7360 kg) Max takeoff weight: 19033 lb (8633 kg) Powerplant: 2× Metropolitan-Vickers Beryl MVB.1 turbojets, 6460 lbf (28.8 kN) each Performance Maximum speed: 512 mph (824 km/h) Range: 1200 miles (1920 km) Rate of climb: 5800 ft per minute (1768 m/min) Wing loading: 39 lb/ft² (190 kg/m²) Thrust/weight: 0.40 Endurance: 2 hrs 24 min Armament 4x 20 mm Hispano Mk 5 2x

Do you think a similar idea can be somwat added to the Tornado jet? Sea Tornado or Vortex. Sounds crazy but i believe it would work.

Is it just me or did British ‘mad genius inventors’ win the war by inventing lots of sensible things like the programmable computer and the jet engine - but in the 50s, frightfully bored with all that sort of thing - decided to really focus on the ‘mad’ bit?

Dopey idea. Thank goodness they didn’t make any more of them. Saltwater and jet turbines don’t mix.

    steveboston11 on 6 February, 2010 at 5:55 pm #

The biggest drawback would be maintenance the constant risk of damage by the fight against salt water and corrosion next would be bad weather making the fight against salt water and corrosion next would be.

My father helped build the princess flying boat was about 12 yrs my atc squadron leader was shown over crowd at farnborough she was about special gear boxes on her and their anxt they removed the mockup when was one of her double engines.

    evilintel on 20 February, 2010 at 5:50 pm #

Would have been nice to see these two in limited production to see how they would of faired in actual combat.

    johnrcha on 24 February, 2010 at 12:59 am #

I was an apprentice engineer at Saunders Roe and remember seeing it fly.Shame it never went into production as I am sure it would have been of use on jungle rivers and lakes in later conflicks.

    teenonator on 26 February, 2010 at 10:27 pm #

It’s too bad there are no engines in her. Without them, she has the feel of a mockup

    cudaslayer on 28 February, 2010 at 4:31 pm #

It’s open to debate. In the hands of a good pilot, and under conditions that might tilt the odds in its favor, such as catching the other jet low on fuel, diving out of the sun, during landing/take off, etc, anything is possible.

Heck, the Gloster Meteors had some problems shooting down V-1 bombs with their guns, but they quickly figured out how to take them out by tipping them over by using their wing tips.

So again, any thing is possible.

    Mikojan88 on 2 March, 2010 at 2:16 pm #

Would it be able to shoot any other fighter jet down?

    cudaslayer on 5 March, 2010 at 9:14 am #

Nope, as stated in this video, the first prototype was built after the war was over.

    Mikojan88 on 5 March, 2010 at 7:48 pm #

The sra1 was able to shoot the japanese down is this really true.
