Can I install a variable resistor/power switch in a single speed belt sander?

I have an “aegBBS1100″ 1100watt belt sander. Could I purchase a suitable variable resistor/speed switch and just splice it in to the switch wiring and stick it out of the handle?
I just wonder if its as simple as connecting one in series with the switch why didn’t they include one? Am I going to get burn’t?!?
